Deus Otiosus: Murderer
19/04/11 || Lord K Philipson
“The first full length album of Danish old school Death machine DEUS OTIOSUS. 8 rotten straightforward melodic Death Metal punches will crawl into the ear to blow out the pus bemired brain. Featuring members of CEREKLOTH, VICTIMIZER, CHURCH BIZARRE.”
Members from who exactly? My pus bemired brain will be blown out?! Holy shit, this must be on par with the second coming of vagina. I will never cease to be amazed over these idiotic press sheets the labels fabricate in feeble attempts of being able to ship albums. I think the world stopped falling for these out-of-touch-with-reality statements many, many aeons ago.
I usually have great expectations for Danish metal. Over the years they have given us one good album by Panzerchrist (“Room service”), a bunch of excellent shit from Invocator back in the day (any which one will do), the occasional King Diamond masterpiece (“Abigail” and “Them”), a series of modern thrash anthems by Hatesphere and… what more… Yeah, Volbeat. I am most prolly forgetting some excellent shit from my neighbors in Denmark, but you know – fuck it. With a history of said country’s metal being quite good, will Deus Otiosus be able to carry the flag forward?
Not really.
Deus Otiosus play death metal with the random Morbid Angel influence thrown in (listen to the keyboards in “No life”, directly stolen from the “Altars of madness” opener “Immortal rites”). That’s as much Morbid Angel as it gets though, the rest of the material is pretty bland old school death metal with the riff-formula of early Unleashed and the likes. The simple, no-frills way of doing things. The problem with this is that those old bands (Unleashed, Grave, etc) knew how to make those riffs memorable as fuck back in the day. Deus Otiosus – not so much.
It’s all worn out like Jenna Jameson’s snatch (I think that thing could actually give birth to Tito Ortiz’s head without problems) and you really don’t get much to be impressed by with Deus Otiosus. So, want me to break down the problems with this band? At your service:
The songs are standard and lacking groove, guitar playing (just listen to the melody lines they throw in to spice things up) is stiff as a corpse and devoid of any kind of emotion and feeling, vocals are below average and the production leaves tons of room for improvement. To make matters worse they have The Grim Reaper in the logo. We all know that shit won’t fly.
Nope, Deus Otiosus offers very, very little of interest – even for the die hard death metal fan. But hey, we all start somewhere.
